A bail bond is set by a judge or calculated by law enforcement based on a risk factor of noncompliance. That is to say, “How much risk is there to the sheriff’s department that the accused will not return to address the charges in court?”
The bail is to cover all costs associated with that risk, and the professional bondsman collects a fee from the customer for posting the bond. The fee that is collected by the professional bondsman is not reimbursable because it serves as loan interest for the lump sum bail. During the course of the bonded person’s court appearance, they are charged with keeping in touch with the bonding agency and keeping the bondsman updated on addresses, phone numbers, work and travels. If the bonded party violates the conditions of the bond, they are subject to be re-incarcerated.
How Does A Bail Bond Work?
Chancey’s Bonding Agency was established in the mid 1980s by Wade C. Chancey. Mr. Chancey, who was born in Charlton County in 1927, is known to have explained that he was getting so many calls from local residents for help when incarcerated that he decided to become a professional bondsman.
Having a background in law enforcement, Mr. Chancey was able to handle the bonds as well as any recovery agent work that became necessary. For close to thirty years, Mr. Chancey continued to work in his business until he passed away in 2012. Since that time his daughter, Julie, who had teamed up with him for the last ten years, took over the business. Julie works to ensure the same quality and customer satisfaction as always.
